Firstly, What The Heck is Keyword Research?

Keyword research is practiced by bloggers to get their websites and blog posts at the top of Google, Bing, and Yahoo’s search index pages.

As a blogger, you simply look up keyword terms and phrases being entered into the main search engines by folks who are looking for info on particular topics as well as products or services before making purchasing decisions.

Google Keywords

And you then write topical blog posts based on the keywords you choose.

There are two ways to perform your searches.

A: You can use Google’s auto-complete function ‘Google Suggest’ which shows you a drop-down menu of terms associated with your search term.

For example, if you type “garden furniture” into Google, it comes up with a bunch of ideas.

The great thing about the feature is that you can really play around and have fun with your searches by digging deeper, for example:

Google will give you literally MILLIONS of ideas from what people are typing into its search engine.

If you want further blog topic ideas, then ‘Answer The Public‘ is another great free resource.

However, the only downside to using both Google Suggest and ATP is that they don’t give you any keyword data for rankings, which leads to:

B: Use a keyword tool. I suggest this one here.

It’s your best option for locating awesome keyword ideas and also discovering the metrics you need for knowing which phrases to pick for getting your content ranked.

4 Important Keyword Metrics

To have success in the search engines, you’ll need to know the volume of traffic, levels of competition and also the quality of keywords, which I’ll show you in two shakes of a lamb’s tail.

In my experience, when you take advantage of a proper research platform (displaying the correct data) – it’s the easiest and quickest way of getting the job done efficiently.

What’s The Importance of Finding Keywords?

The obvious answer is to get “rankings”, right? 😛

But the most important thing is what your rankings are gonna lead to in the long-term.

It’s a really simple equation:

Rankings = Traffic = Sales = Income = SUCCESS = Feeling on Top of The World!

You might write an absolute masterpiece of 1,000s of words, but without the right keyword within your article, the chances are the post won’t get ranked in Google and you’ll miss out on free visitors and potential affiliate commissions.

And this applies to every piece of content you publish on your website.

Your aim is to turn your blog into a skyscraper by consistently publishing content around keywords that are gonna lead to multiple rankings in the search engines and literally TONS of organic visitors as a result.

Did you know some bloggers get 20,000+ website hits on a DAILY basis!

Can you imagine the level of income produced from those figures?

Totally mind-blowing, huh?

So, keywords + high-quality content play the leading role in the success of your online business. Period.

As for “backlinks”, that’s a story for another day lol.

How to do Keyword Research in 3 Easy Steps

First things first, I recommend that you grab a starter account with Jaaxy here so you can follow along with me.

In my experience with keyword tools, I’ve found Jaaxy to be the best pick of the bunch because not only is it super-duper quick and powerful, but it was built specifically for “affiliate marketers” – making it incredibly user-friendly.

Plus Jaaxy gives you 30 searches for free, which is one more good reason to use the platform!

OK, let’s start this baby up and see what she can do!

STEP #1 – Plug in a Keyword

To commence your Easter egg hunt for those golden keyword opportunities, dump a keyword term (that’s highly relevant to your niche) into Jaaxy’s search bar.

For my example, I’ve typed in “baseball teams“.

Right off the bat (PUN intended), I have a bunch of ideas to work with. These are just 7 of the 20 keyword phrases generated.

As for the various keyword criteria and numbers:

Avg = the Average number of searches that a keyword gets each month.

Traffic = the expected amount of monthly traffic that your blog post will get if it hits the first page of Google.

QSR (Quoted Search Results) = a powerful metric for measuring the level of competition (number of search page results) you’re fighting against.

KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator) = a quick overview of whether the keyword you’re targeting is good or bad.

SEO = a ranking score that indicates whether your term is good to use from a Search Engine Optimization standpoint.

STEP #2 – Choose “The Right” Keyword

Now, before you go choosing just any random keyword term willy-nilly for your next blog post, it’s important that find a great one to roll with that can get your content ranked.

Firstly, you must look at the QSR because you want the least amount of competition possible. QSR is the most crucial element!

So choose a number under 100 (ideally as near to 0 as you can).

Secondly, check to ensure that the keyword makes total grammatical sense – one that fits naturally into a blog post title and a sentence within your content.

Right and Wrong Keyword Use

Thirdly, you’ll need a keyword that generates “traffic”.

Ideally, you want the Avg to be at least 40 visitors per month to make it worth your while.

Or in my case, pick a keyword that triggers as much traffic as possible.

But don’t be a gutsy pig because you’ll drive yourself bonkers looking for that perfect keyword that generates a GAZILLION website hits! LOL.

Finally, the KQI needs to read “Great“, and the SEO score needs to be as close to 100 as possible. From 80 upwards is perfectly fine.

Here’s an awesome keyword phrase I found using Jaaxy, and in fact, it’s for this article you’re reading right now. 😉

A Perfect Longtail Keyword Phrase

I’m sure you’ll agree that the phrase ticks all the boxes and fits the criteria perfectly.

#3 – Play The Long Game!

Now, for the final party trick…

I’ve personally found that going for broader ‘long-tail’ keywords is often the best option because you’ll uncover some amazing “hidden gems” with extremely low competition (as you can see from my keyword above ^^).

For the last example, I’ve plugged the term “baseball team shirts” into Jaaxy for a few new long-tail phrase ideas that I compiled into a small list.

Jaaxy Long Tail Keyword Research

Notice how the QSR gets significantly lower with some phrases, the deeper you dig with that Pickaxe for the gold?

If you want big success with your blog in Google, then long-tail keywords are the way to go.

Let’s Wrap it up…

When it comes down to it, finding amazing keywords to build a successful business on the web isn’t exactly rocket science, as some SEO experts make it sound.

Yes, there’s an art to keyword research, but it’s an easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy one at that, that a seasoned or even any newbie blogger and affiliate marketer can practice, in my book.

Once you lay your hands on a super-cool keyword tool that does the job quickly and efficiently, learn the easy process of understanding the essential criteria, and how to effectively do research – then 1st-page Google rankings and success are yours for the taking!
